Background

In many Eastern European societies, youth participation in democratic life remains low. Young people often feel disconnected from decision-making processes, and traditional education systems do not always support the development of civic engagement. This project was created to address that gap using creative methods. By applying informal and non-formal education tools—especially slam poetry—it aimed to connect youth workers with young people in ways that inspire democratic values and self-expression.

Objectives

The main goal of the project was to strengthen the role of youth workers in promoting active citizenship among young people. It aimed to provide them with new tools—such as slam poetry—to better communicate the importance of participation and self-reflection. Through creative expression, youth can better understand themselves and their role in society. The project also focused on developing youth workers’ professional competences to make their work more inclusive, relatable, and impactful.

Implementation

A 7+1-day training course was held in Szeged, Hungary, from September 28 to October 4, 2020. The training brought together 30 youth workers who explored how slam poetry can be used to engage youth. The programme included practical workshops on democratic values, mock debates, identity discussions, and guided writing. Native English speakers helped improve participants’ language and presentation skills. Social activities such as team building and intercultural evenings supported learning in an open and friendly atmosphere.

Key Activities

Participants learned how to write and perform their own poems in a creative and structured way. They co-wrote pieces with professionals, attended a slam poetry club, and presented their final works in a live event called “Slam ‘n’ Jam.” They also explored basic publishing skills and contributed to an e-publication of poems. Visual tools and online platforms supported reflection and evaluation throughout the programme. The training concluded with a Youthpass session and a final evaluation of learning outcomes.

Results

The training equipped youth workers with new methods to inspire and support democratic thinking in young people. Participants developed personal confidence, professional skills, and communication techniques that help them connect with diverse youth audiences. Each poem created during the training became a tool for reflection and social commentary. Materials, including workshop designs and videos, were collected and shared in a digital folder to support further use in other organisations.

Impact

The project had a lasting effect on participants and their communities. Youth workers began using slam poetry and other creative methods in their local contexts. The shared materials and online publication allowed for wider distribution of knowledge. Follow-up activities in partner countries helped spread the project’s message and built a stronger network among youth organisations. The initiative encouraged a new way of thinking about participation—one that blends creativity with civic responsibility.
