What Is IVS and Why Does It Matter?
The International Voluntary Service (IVS) movement began in the 1920s as a response to the devastating impact of World War I. It has since grown into a global network, fostering peace, mutual understanding, and transformational solidarity. IVS projects empower individuals to:
- Engage in meaningful work promoting social and climate justice, human rights, and sustainability.
- Foster active participation and develop critical thinking skills through non-formal education.
- Build bridges across cultures, creating a world of mutual respect and cooperation.
Today, IVS organizations operate in 79 countries worldwide, offering short, medium, and long-term volunteering opportunities that enable people to learn, contribute, and grow.
A Collaborative Effort
The Global IVS Statistics Report 2023 is the result of a collective effort by five major IVS networks:
- ALLIANCE of European Voluntary Service Organizations
- CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service)
- ICYE (International Cultural Youth Exchange)
- NVDA (Network for Voluntary Development in Asia)
