Background

Many young people live in cities and have little contact with nature. They often buy food from supermarkets and do not know where it comes from. Urban life and lack of green spaces make young people feel distant from nature, which can affect their physical and mental well-being. The project responded to this problem by bringing nature back into urban life.

Objectives

The main goal of the project was to reconnect young people with nature and food production. It aimed to increase environmental awareness, reduce food waste, and promote sustainable lifestyles. The project also wanted to build a sense of responsibility, active citizenship, and community among young people through urban gardening.

Implementation

The project lasted two years and was implemented by partner organizations working closely with young people. Activities combined research, digital tools, education, and hands-on practice. Youth workers and young participants were involved in all stages, from planning to testing and local actions.

Key Activities

Key activities included research on urban green spaces, creation of an online platform and mobile app, and video tutorials on urban farming. Young people also took part in public garden interventions, where they helped create or renew green spaces. The project ended with a youth exchange and the creation of a sustainable cookbook.

Results

Young people learned how to grow food in small urban spaces such as balconies, rooftops, and gardens. They gained basic agricultural skills and better understanding of food origins. Digital tools like the app and website made the results accessible to a wider audience and supported long-term learning.

Impact

The project increased environmental awareness and strengthened the connection between young people and nature. It supported mental well-being, encouraged sustainable habits, and promoted community cooperation. Urban Youth Gardens also inspired young people to see agriculture and sustainability as important parts of their future.
