Addressing Radicalization and Promoting Inclusion
The Extremely Against Extremism in Europe project was a youth exchange initiative that brought together young people from six different countries, spanning both European Union members and neighboring partner countries. The project was designed to tackle the pressing issues of radicalization, extremism, and xenophobia, particularly in light of migration challenges and cultural integration in Europe.
The youth exchange took place in Yerevan, Armenia, between August 30 and September 8, 2021. Participants came from Portugal, North Macedonia, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and Ukraine. Through intercultural dialogue, learning, and communication, young people explored ways to combat radicalization and promote a culture of tolerance and acceptance.
Objectives of the Project
The project aimed to:
- Facilitate discussions on intercultural learning and the importance of overcoming stereotypes.
- Exchange knowledge on cultural diversity and promote inclusive societies.
- Develop a shared understanding of multiculturalism and intercultural dialogue.
- Use intercultural learning as a tool to prevent radicalization.
- Introduce participants to Erasmus+ opportunities for promoting tolerance and anti-discrimination efforts.

Given the rising tensions related to migration and cultural diversity, the project emphasized the value of coexistence and mutual understanding. Participants were encouraged to recognize cultural differences while focusing on shared human values.
Implementation and Activities
Advance Planning Visit (APV)
Prior to the main youth exchange, an Advance Planning Visit (APV) was conducted to ensure the project’s success. One leader and one participant from each country traveled to Armenia to finalize the organizational details, visit venues, and review the project schedule. This preparatory phase ensured that all partners had a shared vision and concrete action plan.
Youth Exchange Activities
The youth exchange was structured around non-formal education methodologies, encouraging active participation and experiential learning. Activities included:
- Workshops on Intercultural Learning – exploring different cultures, traditions, and ways to overcome stereotypes.
- Debates and Group Discussions – addressing radicalization, discrimination, and the role of youth in fostering social cohesion.
- Cultural Simulations and Outdoor Activities – allowing participants to experience cultural diversity in an interactive way.
- Non-Formal Learning Exercises – including storytelling, role-playing, and creative tasks to enhance understanding of different cultural perspectives.
- Development of New Project Ideas – participants brainstormed and outlined potential initiatives to continue the work beyond the exchange.
