Background
Many small NGOs and youth organisations in Europe struggle with measuring the impact of their projects. This leads to missed opportunities for improvement and growth. “Be the Change You Want to See” was launched to support these organisations by promoting simple and effective ways to measure and communicate project outcomes.
Objectives
The project aimed to help nine youth organisations develop skills in evaluating the results of their work. The main goals were to improve the quality of youth mobility activities, make evaluation a routine practice, and ensure these results are shared widely. The project also supported inclusion, civic engagement, and a sense of responsibility among young people.
Implementation
The project lasted 14 months and included several phases: recruitment, online meetings, an international training course, local follow-up projects, a seminar, and the creation of a practical guide. Each organisation selected a team of three participants to take part in activities: a decision-maker, a youth worker, and a volunteer with fewer opportunities.
Key Activities
Participants joined training sessions, mentorship programs, and peer-learning groups. They explored impact assessment tools, non-formal education methods, and communication strategies. A key part of the project was creating a “Practical Guide to Impact Measurement in International Youth Mobility Activities” to support others in the sector.
Results
Participants developed strong skills in impact measurement and learned how to plan more effective youth activities. Organisations gained confidence and clarity on how to evaluate their projects. The guide created during the project serves as a valuable tool for many more NGOs across Europe, encouraging them to adopt similar practices.
Impact
The project directly involved 27 participants and influenced at least 9 youth organisations. By 2023, over 1,800 young people benefitted from higher-quality mobility experiences. The guide was shared with over 100 organisations, and its reach continues to grow. Participants became ambassadors of quality youth work, spreading knowledge and best practices in their countries.
