Background
Today, environmental responsibility is more important than ever, and youth work must also adapt to this need. Many youth organisations want to include sustainable values in their activities but lack clear methods or training. The project greeNEED Youth Work 3 was created to fill this gap. It focused on developing green practices and environmentally friendly methods in youth work across Europe.
Objectives
The project had several goals. First, it aimed to teach youth workers how to include environmental awareness in their programmes. Second, it promoted sustainable growth through practical examples and action plans. Participants learned to reduce waste, use creative materials, and run eco-friendly activities. The project also introduced methods to raise awareness about climate change and encourage young people to be active in environmental protection.
Implementation
The main activity was a training course held in Istanbul, Turkey, from November 11 to March 20, 2024. A total of 35 youth workers from 7 countries took part. The programme was run by 3 experienced trainers and 3 facilitators using non-formal and informal education methods. The working language was English. Participants were selected for their creativity, openness to innovation, and experience in youth work.
Key Activities
Throughout the training, participants explored green skills and methods through workshops, discussions, and group tasks. They learned about global warming, carbon and water footprints, and current green trends. Youth workers also practiced designing and adapting educational activities to make them more eco-conscious. Collaboration and cultural exchange were encouraged to help everyone share their ideas and develop new teaching techniques together.
Results
The project successfully combined green values with youth work methods. Participants gained new tools to apply in their everyday work with young people. They developed personal action plans and shared them with their organisations. The training improved their understanding of environmental topics and helped them use creative, low-waste approaches. A strong focus on practical learning ensured that new methods could be directly applied after the project.
Impact
GreeNEED Youth Work 3 helped build a network of environmentally aware youth workers across Europe. The training inspired new projects, promoted sustainable values, and encouraged cooperation among organisations. Participants returned home motivated to lead change in their communities. The project also contributed to innovation in youth work, linking climate education with active participation and creative learning.
