Background
Although emotional intelligence (EI) has become a common topic in youth work, many professionals still lack a deeper understanding of its components. In daily practice, youth workers often struggle to apply EI effectively, especially when supporting young people with emotional and social challenges. This project aimed to change that by offering an in-depth training course focused on emotional intelligence, both as a personal skill and a youth work tool.
Objectives
The main goal was to improve the quality of youth work by developing EI skills among 24 youth workers. Specific objectives included increasing awareness about EI as a vital competence, exploring real-life emotional situations through experiential methods, and promoting self-awareness and self-regulation. Participants were also encouraged to design follow-up activities to apply their learning in their local communities.
Implementation
The project featured a 9-day international training course held in Ēdole, Latvia. Participants came from 9 different countries, each represented by 2–3 youth workers. The training combined outdoor experiences, group learning, and non-formal education. A two-day nature hike was used to challenge participants emotionally and deepen their understanding of self-regulation and interpersonal connection.
Key Activities
The training course followed the experiential learning approach, focusing on real-life emotional challenges and outdoor learning. Activities included interactive workshops, role-playing, and personal reflection. The outdoor hike was a core element, creating an environment for practical learning. After the training, participants were expected to lead workshops or sessions in their communities to pass on their new knowledge.
Results
By the end of the project, 24 youth workers had significantly developed their emotional intelligence. They gained practical tools to use EI in youth work and became more confident in guiding young people through emotional development. Each participant also contributed to spreading the impact of the training by implementing local activities.
Impact
The project strengthened emotional awareness across participating organizations and communities. Youth workers became role models for emotional intelligence, inspiring others through both their actions and educational methods. As a result, the overall emotional climate of the youth work environment improved, contributing to deeper, more meaningful relationships with young people.
