Background
The SDG4Youth project was created to respond to the need for stronger youth participation in social and environmental issues across Europe. Many young people are aware of global challenges but lack the tools, knowledge, and confidence to engage in decision-making. The project recognised the importance of connecting youth with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and helping them become active contributors to their communities.
Objectives
The main aim of SDG4Youth was to encourage young people to take part in topics that directly affect their lives and their societies. The project focused on equipping youth workers and young people with skills to design solutions for social challenges. It also aimed to promote European values, introduce the SDGs, and help participants develop key competencies needed for lifelong learning and active citizenship.
Implementation
The project was carried out through five structured work packages. These included project management, research, virtual mobility activities, training workshops, testing of results, and large-scale dissemination efforts. Regular online and in-person meetings ensured smooth cooperation between partners. Young participants and youth workers worked together, sharing ideas and helping improve each stage of the project.
Key Activities
Activities covered a wide range of learning experiences. Virtual mobility sessions allowed youth workers and young people to meet, exchange views, and learn from each other. Workshops and online seminars focused on the SDGs, social innovation, and community participation. The project also produced and tested several educational tools designed to support youth engagement. Dissemination events helped share the outcomes with wider audiences at the local and European levels.
Results
The project produced several tangible results, including the SDG4Youth Guide—a practical manual that supports youth participation in the SDGs. A project booklet and multiple learning materials were also created. In addition, the project strengthened key competencies like creativity, digital skills, critical thinking, multilingual communication, and active citizenship among the young participants.
Impact
SDG4Youth had a strong impact on youth workers, young people, and partner organisations. It improved the quality of youth work through innovative tools and strengthened the ability of young people to participate in community life. The project promoted inclusion by engaging youth from different backgrounds and encouraged long-term involvement in sustainable development. By spreading knowledge about the SDGs, it helped shape a more aware, proactive, and engaged young generation.
