Empowering Youth Through Sport and Education
The “Youth Empowerment & Sport: Developing Life Skills Through Sport” project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, was a transformative initiative that aimed to address critical social issues affecting young people. Running from May 1, 2020, to November 30, 2021, the project engaged participants across nine countries, fostering skill development, social inclusion, and youth empowerment through non-formal education (NFE) and sports.
Addressing a Pressing Social Issue
In an era of rapid technological advancements and globalization, many young individuals struggle with disengagement from education, social exclusion, and limited opportunities. The project sought to combat these issues by equipping youth workers with the necessary skills and methodologies to support young people in their personal and social development. A key aspect of this initiative was leveraging the power of sports as a tool for education, social inclusion, and personal growth.
Project Goals and Objectives
The project was designed with clear objectives to address the challenges faced by youth, particularly those at risk of social exclusion. Some of the primary goals included:
- Enhancing the key competencies of youth workers to effectively engage with young people.
- Encouraging participation and involvement of disadvantaged youth in meaningful activities.
- Promoting lifelong learning and the value of education.
- Developing a sense of community, solidarity, and active citizenship among young people.
- Reducing early school leaving and failure rates by offering alternative learning pathways.
Implementation and Activities
To achieve its goals, the project was structured into several key phases, incorporating various activities:
1. Preparation Activities: Each participating country conducted local meetings, stakeholder engagement initiatives, and networking activities to establish a strong foundation for the project. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most activities were carried out online from May 2020 to September 2021.
2. Mobility Activity: A significant milestone was the Training Course (TC) held in Lisbon, Portugal, from September 27 to October 1, 2021. This mobility activity brought together youth workers to develop new methodologies, tools, and approaches for working with young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
3. Dissemination Activities: Awareness and outreach efforts included seminars, workshops, and digital campaigns conducted across participating countries. These activities were essential in ensuring the sustainability and wider impact of the project.
4. Monitoring and Evaluation: Throughout the project, continuous assessment and evaluation took place to measure progress and identify areas for improvement. This ensured that objectives were met effectively and that lessons learned could be applied to future initiatives.
