EU Grant: €81,376.92
Programme: Erasmus+
Action Type: Mobility of Young People
Countries Involved: Belgium, Portugal

Project Background

Powered by Nature: A Journey through Mental Health was created to improve the mental well-being, resilience, and social inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. The project recognised that many young people face social, economic, and educational barriers that affect their confidence and emotional health.

By combining international mobility with nature-based learning, the project offered participants a safe environment where they could develop personally, build new friendships, and improve their well-being.

Project Objectives

The project aimed to create a supportive space where young people could openly express their emotions and develop stronger self-confidence. Another important goal was to improve social and intercultural competences through teamwork and shared international experiences.

The project also promoted environmental awareness by encouraging participants to reconnect with nature while strengthening their sense of European citizenship through practical learning and intercultural exchange.

Project Implementation

The project included two international youth exchanges organised in Belgium and Madeira, Portugal. A total of 56 young people with fewer opportunities and experienced group leaders took part in the activities.

The programme combined outdoor challenges, nature-based learning, cultural visits, and daily reflection sessions. Throughout the project, participants received continuous support in a safe and inclusive environment that respected individual needs and encouraged active participation.

Key Activities

Participants took part in outdoor learning experiences designed to strengthen emotional well-being and teamwork. Nature-based activities, reflection circles, intercultural workshops, and cultural visits helped them improve communication skills, build resilience, and develop meaningful connections with others.

Close cooperation between the partner organisations ensured high-quality implementation. Regular communication, shared responsibilities, and flexible planning allowed the programme to respond effectively to participants’ needs.

Project Results

The project achieved all of its objectives and produced a strong positive impact on participants. Many young people reported higher self-confidence, greater emotional awareness, and improved social skills after completing the exchanges.

Participants also felt more connected to nature, more resilient when facing personal challenges, and more motivated to stay involved in their local communities. The positive effects continued after they returned home.

Impact on Participants and Organisations

The project strengthened the capacity of both partner organisations by introducing new methods such as reflection circles and nature-based learning activities. Staff members gained valuable experience in organising inclusive international mobility projects and supporting young people with fewer opportunities.

The project also inspired colleagues, local partners, and community stakeholders to explore new approaches to youth work and international cooperation.

Long-Term Impact

Powered by Nature: A Journey through Mental Health demonstrated that international youth exchanges can create lasting personal, organisational, and community impact. By combining inclusion, mental well-being, and nature-based learning, the project empowered young people to become more confident, resilient, and socially connected.

The experience also strengthened cooperation between the partner organisations and provided practical methods that will continue to improve youth work and support young people in future Erasmus+ initiatives.
