Introduction

In an era where sustainability and resource-sharing are becoming increasingly vital, training youth educators in environmental education and the sharing economy is essential. The BETSEE Project (Best practices Exchange for youth Trainers in the field of Sharing Economy and Ecology) aimed to equip youth trainers with the necessary skills and knowledge to promote ecological awareness and sustainable economic practices. Funded by Erasmus+, this initiative ran from April 1, 2021, to November 30, 2022, covering four European countries.

Background and Objectives

The project was initiated to address a crucial gap: many youth educators lacked conceptual knowledge in teaching environmental best practices and sharing economy principles. By directly involving trainers in study visits and the development of the Green E-Manual BETSEE, the project sought to create practical tools for educators.

The primary objectives of BETSEE were:

  1. Enhancing pedagogical skills – Equipping youth workers with knowledge of sharing economy and environmental best practices to better educate young people.
  2. Developing essential soft skills – Helping young people, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, acquire teamwork, management, and communication skills crucial for the job market.
  3. Promoting sustainability – Encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly practices and reducing waste through the sharing economy.
  4. Fostering European collaboration – Strengthening cooperation among training organizations to develop new educational tools and exchange best practices in environmental education.

Project Implementation

BETSEE implemented several key activities to achieve its goals:

  • Study Visits – Trainers participated in field visits in Portugal (December 10, 2021), Italy (May 13, 2022), and Ireland (November 25, 2022) to observe and learn best practices firsthand.
  • Local Workshops – Youth were engaged in activities focused on environmental education and the sharing economy.
  • Development of the Green E-Manual – This digital manual included:
    • Research on the sharing economy situation in each partner country.
    • A collection of the best methodologies for teaching sustainable sharing practices.
    • A curated list of smartphone applications supporting the green sharing economy.

Project Management and Dissemination

To ensure the success of BETSEE, partners engaged in various management and dissemination efforts:

  • Widespread dissemination – Results were shared across European and local networks.
  • Project evaluations – Surveys and assessments were conducted to gauge effectiveness.
  • Recruitment of participants – Young people were selected for study visits and training activities.
  • Community engagement – Local stakeholders were actively involved in the project.
  • Reporting and documentation – Regular reports, meeting records, and dissemination materials were developed and shared.

Key Outcomes and Results

The main outcome of BETSEE was the Green E-Manual, now accessible on partner websites. This manual consists of:

  1. Analysis of the green sharing economy – A detailed study of France, Portugal, Italy, and Ireland, including best teaching practices for youth trainers.
  2. Compilation of eco-friendly sharing platforms – A list of the most innovative sharing economy applications in partner countries.

Additional project outputs included:

  • Management documents (Gantt charts, meeting reports, task lists)
  • Quality control reports for meetings and training sessions
  • Dissemination materials (newsletters, logos, social media content, etc.)
  • Reports on local training activities and international exchanges

Conclusion

The BETSEE Project successfully provided youth educators with the tools and knowledge to train young people in sustainable economic practices. By fostering collaboration, skill development, and awareness, BETSEE has contributed to a greener and more inclusive future. Its legacy continues through the Green E-Manual, ensuring ongoing impact in youth education and environmental sustainability.
