Introduction
The Erasmus+ project “Ecological Future Diverse and Inclusive” (EFDI), has successfully completed its mission of enhancing ecological competencies among people with disabilities.
Coordinated by LebensGroß GmbH in Austria, this initiative has brought together partners from Austria, Germany, Romania, and Slovakia to create inclusive educational programs tailored to the needs of individuals with intellectual and complex disabilities.
Project overview
EFDI aimed to fix the gap in ecological education for people with disabilities, a group often overlooked in sustainability initiatives.
By developing inclusive educational materials and methods, the project has empowered individuals to adopt an ecologically conscious lifestyle and increase their awareness of climate change and environmental issues.
Key achievements
- Tailor-Made Educational Materials
The EFDI project developed a comprehensive curriculum focusing on climate, food, mobility, consumption, and biodiversity. This curriculum was specifically designed to meet the learning needs of people with intellectual and complex disabilities. It includes easy-to-read materials and multisensory activities to ensure accessibility and engagement.
- Inclusive Community Experiences
The project created guidelines for community-based learning experiences, enabling participants to learn about ecological processes through direct interaction with their local environment. Activities included visits to recycling centers, local food producers, and swap shops, fostering a hands-on understanding of sustainability.
- Empowerment Through Campaigns
EFDI produced a campaigning set that encourages individuals with disabilities to become active advocates for ecological sustainability. This resource includes practical suggestions and materials for launching environmental campaigns, promoting active participation in democratic life.
- Multisensory Learning Tools
Furthermore a multisensory art book and toolbox were developed to provide a sensory-based learning approach. These tools help participants understand ecological topics on an emotional and sensory level, enhancing their ability to grasp complex environmental concepts.
Impact on education
The EFDI project has significantly impacted adult education by integrating ecological literacy into the curriculum for people with disabilities.
It has also provided them with the knowledge and skills needed to live more sustainably and has inspired service providers in the disability sector to adopt new approaches to education.
Future prospect
Building on its success, the EFDI project aims to continue expanding its reach and impact. Future initiatives will include more extensive training programs, additional educational resources, and increased community engagement to further promote ecological education among people with disabilities.
