In a period of social and economic challenges for Europe, the project “Extremely Against Extremism in Europe” addresses the core issues of radicalization and xenophobia, proving that intercultural dialogue remains the most effective tool for youth de-radicalization.
The rise of racist and xenophobic attitudes, often fueled by the refugee crisis, has put European values to the test. This Erasmus+ Youth Exchange, organized by MOJU, serves as a strategic response to these challenges, bringing together young people to reclaim the concepts of interculturalism and multiculturalism.
The Strategic Objectives
The initiative was designed not just as a meeting, but as a structured educational intervention. The core goals included:
- Deconstructing Stereotypes: Engaging in critical discussions to avoid the creation of new cultural biases.
- Defining Multiculturalism: Developing a shared understanding of diverse European identities.
- Erasmus+ as a Tool: Learning how to leverage EU programmes to promote anti-discrimination and tolerance.
- Future Cooperation: Building a foundation for new projects that promote dialogue among different European communities.
Implementation: Beyond Theory
The project was executed through a rigorous methodology that ensured both safety and educational quality.
1. The Advanced Planning Visit (APV)
Before the main event, a 2-day APV was held in Armenia. Leaders and participants from each country visited the venues and adjusted the timetable. This ensured that the hosting conditions were favorable and that every partner organization contributed to the final outcome.
2. Non-Formal Education (NFE)
The program moved away from “formal” schooling. Instead, it focused on:
- Experiential Learning: Learning by doing through simulation games and outdoor activities.
- Peer-to-Peer Exchange: Encouraging participants to share personal stories regarding radicalization in their home countries.
- Eye Contact & Equality: Prioritizing human connection over abstract theory to show that despite cultural differences, the “essence” of all youth is the same.
Reach and Inclusion
The project successfully bridged the gap between EU Member States and Neighboring Partner countries:
- The Network: Portugal, North Macedonia, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and Ukraine.
- Focus on Inclusion: A priority was set on involving young people with fewer opportunities, particularly refugee youth facing social and financial obstacles.
What’s at Stake: Achievements and Impact
The results of “Extremely Against Extremism” demonstrate the high return on investment for the EU education budget:
- Local Multiplication: Upon returning home, participants organized workshops to transfer their knowledge to peers in local schools and universities.
- Enhanced Awareness: Participants gained a deep understanding of how migration and radicalization are interlinked and how to counter extremist narratives.
- Friendship and Cooperation: Beyond the educational goals, the project fostered lasting international friendships and professional partnerships between the six participating NGOs.
