Team for Healthy Life 2 (T4HL2) is the second edition of a European Solidarity Corps (ESC) Team Volunteering project organised by Associazione Joint and aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles among young people through physical activity, outdoor experiences and community-based actions. Building on the results and lessons learned during the first edition, T4HL2 further strengthened the connection between international volunteering, well-being and social inclusion.

The project was developed in line with the ESC Team Priority Areas and responded to the increasing need to address the physical and mental health challenges faced by young people, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns, social isolation and sedentary habits have had a long-lasting impact on youth well-being, making the promotion of healthy routines, movement and social connection a key educational priority.

T4HL2 involved 4 host organisations across Italy, selected for their strong experience in sport, outdoor education, health promotion and community engagement. Each hosting organisation integrated healthy lifestyle actions into daily volunteering activities, with particular attention to the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. Through structured routines, supportive environments and close cooperation with local stakeholders, volunteers were not only beneficiaries of the experience but also active contributors to the well-being of local communities.

Daily Activities and Methodologies for Healthy Living

Volunteers participating in T4HL2 experienced structured daily routines designed to encourage physical activity, cooperation, and personal growth. Mornings often included outdoor tasks such as ecological maintenance, gardening, or animal care, which promoted body awareness and active participation. Afternoons were dedicated to workshops ranging from yoga, team sports, and judo, to creative activities such as tote bag decoration and manual arts, supporting both physical and mental health.

Weekly reflection groups offered volunteers a space to share experiences, emotions, and challenges, fostering emotional resilience and social cohesion. Italian language classes and cultural activities strengthened integration with local communities, reducing social barriers and promoting inclusion. Adventure-based activities such as rafting, hiking, paragliding, and cycling encouraged teamwork, confidence, and resilience, demonstrating how outdoor experiences can enhance well-being in accessible and engaging ways.

As a result of the activities carried out during the ESC Teams, the handbook provides practical guidance for implementing these activities, including safety protocols, timetables, and methods to adapt workshops for young people with fewer opportunities. Organisations can use it to design volunteering experiences that balance physical exertion, creative expression, rest, and social connection, ensuring volunteers develop holistic healthy habits.

Conclusion

T4HL2 demonstrates that ESC Team Volunteering is an effective approach to promote holistic health by combining physical activity, mental wellness, and social inclusion. Volunteers benefit from structured routines, outdoor engagement, and community interaction, while local communities gain from active participation and shared initiatives.
