Promoting Tolerance and Diversity in Online Spheres: A Youth Exchange Between Germany and Morocco

Introduction to the Project

The Erasmus+ project titled “Online Spheres – Tolerance and Diversity” was a youth mobility initiative carried out under the reference number 2020-3-DE04-KA105-020626. Although no EU grant was allocated for the project, its impact and significance far surpassed its financial framework. Running from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022, this completed project brought together youth from Germany and Morocco with a shared goal: to promote digital competence, cultural exchange, and active citizenship.

Organized by Weltblick and its Moroccan partner, this initiative aligned with key European objectives in youth mobility and intercultural dialogue, especially in today’s increasingly digital world.

Empowering the Disadvantaged Through Inclusion

At the heart of the project was a commitment to socially disadvantaged youth, particularly those marginalized due to migration backgrounds. The participants included German-Moroccan youth, many of whom had never taken part in any youth mobility activity. The initiative sought to bridge this gap by giving them access to non-formal learning opportunities that would encourage critical thinking, digital literacy, and active participation in both local and international dialogues.

By stepping out of their comfort zones, the youth were able to build self-confidence and develop the courage to engage with complex global and social issues. One of the key educational aims was to foster the ability to critically assess information found online and participate in meaningful, constructive discussions in digital spaces.

Strengthening EU and Neighboring Ties

Despite Morocco not being a member of the European Union, the project organizers saw an urgent need to foster relationships with countries just beyond the EU’s external borders. The close cultural and historical ties between Morocco and Europe, coupled with ongoing migration dynamics, highlighted the importance of cooperation and mutual understanding.

The city of Wiesbaden’s long-standing partnership with Al Hoceima in Morocco provided an ideal framework for this exchange. By involving both Moroccan youth and German youth with Moroccan heritage, the project encouraged transnational understanding and addressed issues of discrimination and exclusion in both local and global contexts.

Creative and Interactive Learning Methods

A total of 32 youth participants and four experienced trainers engaged in a series of activities that combined education, creativity, and recreation. Innovative methods such as the Theater of the Oppressed were employed to empower the youth to express their perspectives and explore social justice themes. Learning was further enriched through artistic projects, interviews, media exploration, and open discussion forums.

To keep motivation high and reduce learning fatigue, the program also included enjoyable and relaxing activities such as hiking, beach walks, and visits to cultural landmarks. This blend of cognitive, emotional, and physical engagement created a well-rounded learning experience that was both impactful and enjoyable.

Tangible Outcomes and Long-Term Impact

The ripple effects of the project extended far beyond its immediate timeline. Participants returned home with not just memories but renewed confidence and motivation. They shared their experiences with peers, inspiring others to engage in similar programs. This peer-to-peer transmission of enthusiasm significantly broadened the project’s impact within local communities.

On an organizational level, the collaboration between Weltblick and Young United was strengthened, laying the groundwork for future projects. The participating organizations also gained increased visibility and credibility within their respective regions.

Perhaps most significantly, many of the young participants developed a newfound interest in becoming active in youth work. Some began supporting existing community initiatives, while others showed interest in starting their own. Awareness of the Erasmus+ program and the Youthpass tool also increased, contributing to greater EU engagement among the youth.

Conclusion

The Online Spheres – Tolerance and Diversity project demonstrated how targeted youth exchanges can promote inclusion, cultural dialogue, and active citizenship, especially in the digital age. By connecting young people from Germany and Morocco in a spirit of mutual learning and respect, the project not only built bridges between two cultures but also empowered a new generation to advocate for diversity, tolerance, and informed participation in online and offline spheres alike.
