Project Overview
Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands: Employment and Entrepreneurship was a European project focused on improving employability and inclusion for deaf and hard-of-hearing young people. It also supported youth workers who work with this target group. The project developed accessible learning tools and training materials to help young people build skills for work and entrepreneurship.
Background
Many deaf and hard-of-hearing young people face barriers in the labour market. These include unemployment, low wages, and communication problems at work. There are also few learning resources in sign language or adapted formats. In addition, youth workers often do not have enough tools or knowledge to fully support these young people. This project was created to solve these problems through inclusive education and training.
Objectives
The main goal was to improve employability and social inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing youth. The project also aimed to strengthen the skills of youth workers so they can better support this group. It focused on career development, independence, and equal opportunities. Another aim was to increase awareness of entrepreneurship and self-employment as real career options.
Implementation
The project developed several connected tools and activities. A curriculum was created for youth workers to improve their knowledge of hearing impairment and labour market challenges. A toolkit with workshops was designed for young people to build employability skills. Two online courses supported career learning and entrepreneurship. All materials were adapted for accessibility and tested in practice.
Key Activities
An online platform was created to host all learning resources in five languages. Youth workers and young people tested the materials through trainings and workshops. Social media campaigns helped to promote the project and reach a wider audience. A final conference brought together stakeholders to present results and share experiences from the project.
Achievements
The project produced a curriculum, a toolkit, two online courses, and an accessible learning platform. All resources are available online and designed for long-term use. Five awareness campaigns increased visibility and engagement. More participants than expected joined trainings and events. Deaf and hard-of-hearing young people also worked as contributors, gaining real work experience.
Conclusion
The project successfully improved access to learning and career opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth. It also strengthened the capacity of youth workers across partner countries. By combining inclusive education and digital tools, the project created long-term resources that support employment and entrepreneurship. It promotes equality, independence, and better future opportunities for all participants.
