Programme: Erasmus+ | Action Type: Youth Dialogue Projects
The CoopAxle project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, was launched with the goal of enhancing youth participation in civic life and policymaking in Poland. Centered around a creative and educational simulation game titled “Oś Współpracy” (translated as CoopAxle), the project brought together over 540 high school students, 40 teachers, and numerous local decision-makers across five regions in Poland. The initiative served as a robust platform for youth dialogue and democratic engagement.
At its core, CoopAxle aimed to strengthen structured dialogue between young people and local policymakers, fostering a more democratic attitude among youth. It offered participants an engaging and practical opportunity to voice their opinions, understand the mechanics of local governance, and contribute ideas that could influence regional youth policy. The initiative directly addressed a critical need—giving young people, especially high school students aged 15–20, a meaningful role in shaping the civic space they are part of.
The project’s key method was a series of fifteen interactive workshops that used the CoopAxle simulation game. In these sessions, students stepped into the roles of local leaders and policymakers, debating real issues affecting their communities. These role-playing experiences allowed them to explore challenges in areas like public services, education, and development at the municipal level (gmina), and helped them better understand how decisions are made. The workshops were more than just simulations—they were exercises in leadership, collaboration, and democratic values.
In addition to the workshops, a final conference was held, providing a platform to showcase the project’s outcomes and celebrate its achievements. The event featured training panels, presentations from guest speakers, simulation games, and debates. One highlight was a “Train the Trainers” session for teachers, equipping 40 educators with the skills to use CoopAxle in their own classrooms. This training ensured the project’s sustainability, allowing the tool to continue supporting civic education long after the project ended.
The CoopAxle project successfully impacted all stakeholder groups. Young participants gained critical civil competencies and a stronger understanding of European youth policy. Teachers were introduced to an innovative teaching method that could enhance civic education in schools. Local decision-makers benefitted from direct dialogue with youth, gaining insights into the needs and priorities of young citizens—future voters and active community members.
In conclusion, CoopAxle stands as a strong example of youth empowerment at the local level. It fostered civic responsibility, promoted democratic values, and created lasting partnerships between young people, educators, and policymakers. As a “Good Practice” model, it demonstrates how game-based learning and structured dialogue can transform civic education and amplify young voices in policy development.
