Project Reference: 2023-1-MT01-KA153-YOU-000134745
Status: Completed
Duration: June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2025
EU Grant: 68,000 EUR
Programme: Erasmus+
Action Type: Mobility of Youth Workers
Countries Involved: Malta, Türkiye, Finland, Lithuania, Georgia
Background
Environmental protection and climate change are major global challenges. The European Union promotes sustainable development through initiatives such as the Green Deal and the Circular Economy. Young people will face the long-term effects of environmental problems, so it is important to raise awareness and build environmental responsibility among them. The project “Scouts Cooperating On Uncontrolled Waste Treatment Solutions in Europe” was created to help scout leaders educate young people about sustainability and responsible use of natural resources.
Objectives
The project aimed to train scout leaders and youth workers so they could better teach young people about environmental issues. Participants explored topics such as plastic pollution, waste management, water conservation, and sustainable resource use. Another goal was to encourage international cooperation and exchange of good practices between organisations from different countries. The project also focused on developing practical action plans that support environmental protection at local and international levels.
Implementation
The project involved scout leaders and youth workers from five countries: Malta, Türkiye, Finland, Lithuania, and Georgia. Participants took part in several international mobilities that included three-day training sessions focused on environmental education and non-formal learning methods. During these trainings, participants attended workshops, debates, round tables, and field visits that helped them better understand environmental challenges and possible solutions.
Key Activities
Participants explored important topics such as circular economy, sustainable waste management, and responsible consumer behaviour. They also discussed national and European environmental policies and learned how to design local youth projects focused on sustainability. Field visits to environmental initiatives, local authorities, and waste management facilities helped participants see real-life examples of environmental solutions. Cultural exchange activities, including team-building games and traditional events, strengthened cooperation and intercultural understanding.
Results
As a result of the project, participants gained new knowledge and practical tools to lead environmental initiatives in their communities. Educational resources, presentations, and toolkits were created to support youth work in environmental education. Participants shared these materials with their organisations and used them to organise activities such as clean-up campaigns, awareness workshops, and sustainability challenges for young people.
Impact
The project had a positive impact on participants, organisations, and local communities. Youth workers improved their leadership, communication, and mentoring skills while gaining confidence to promote environmental education. Partner organisations strengthened their cooperation and developed new ideas for future projects. Local communities also benefited from increased environmental awareness and youth-led initiatives. Overall, the project demonstrated how international cooperation can help young people take an active role in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable lifestyles.
