Transversal skills, such as critical thinking, teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving, are essential for success in today’s dynamic job market. Yet, these skills often go unrecognized in traditional validation and guidance processes. The TRANSVAL-EU project set out to change that by exploring innovative ways to make transversal skills explicit and integrate them into validation systems across Europe.
What is TRANSVAL-EU?
TRANSVAL-EU, a pioneering initiative funded under the Erasmus+ Programme, focused on validating transversal skills acquired through non-formal and informal learning (VNFIL). Running from February 2021 to August 2023, the project aimed to empower career guidance practitioners, validation assessors, and counsellors with the tools and knowledge to better recognize these critical competencies.
With seven participating countries—Austria, Belgium, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, and more—the project tested innovative approaches through pilot programs in five of them. This cross-border collaboration ensured a diverse range of insights and best practices.
Objectives of the Project
The primary goal of TRANSVAL-EU was to raise awareness about the importance of transversal skills and their validation. By providing capacity-building initiatives, the project equipped practitioners with:
- Comprehensive Training Toolkits to effectively assess transversal competences.
- Standardized Competence Profiles tailored for validation and guidance professionals.
- Research-Based Practices that inform policy reform and practical application.
Why is This Important?
Transversal skills often develop in informal settings, like volunteering, sports, or hobbies, making them harder to quantify compared to formal qualifications. Yet, these skills are crucial in adapting to a rapidly changing world. TRANSVAL-EU bridged this gap, ensuring that skills gained outside traditional classrooms are recognized and valued.
By fostering cross-sector cooperation among policy-makers, practitioners, and stakeholders, the project contributed to building stronger and more coherent VNFIL systems at the local, national, and European levels.
The Project’s Impact
TRANSVAL-EU didn’t just stop at discussions. It implemented practical solutions that influenced policies and practices:
- Developing a comprehensive research base on transversal competence validation.
- Designing and testing tools and training programs in pilot countries.
- Offering transferable insights and solutions for broader European adoption.
These efforts have placed transversal skills at the center of career development discussions, ensuring their recognition as critical assets for individuals and society.
