Countries Involved: Czech Republic, Spain, Slovenia, Turkey, Romania
Background
Today many young people spend a large amount of time on social media and other digital platforms. While technology offers many opportunities, excessive use can affect mental health, concentration, and personal relationships. The project “Disconnect to Connect” was created to address this challenge. It aimed to raise awareness about the risks of digital addiction and encourage young people to develop a healthier and more balanced relationship with social media.
Objectives
The main goal of the project was to help young people better understand their digital habits and learn how to manage their time online. The project also aimed to promote digital literacy, mental well-being, and responsible use of technology. Another important objective was to create a safe international environment where young people could share experiences, reflect on their online behaviour, and learn from each other.
Implementation
The initiative brought together youth organisations from five European countries. Through international cooperation, partners created a learning environment where participants could discuss the impact of social media on their daily lives. The project used non-formal education methods to make learning interactive and engaging. It also strengthened cooperation between organisations working in youth and adult education.
Key Activities
The main activities took place during an international youth exchange. Participants joined workshops, group discussions, role-plays, and team activities focused on digital well-being and media awareness. Experts also contributed to the programme. A therapist explained the signs of digital addiction and shared practical techniques from cognitive-behavioural therapy. Another session introduced breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and simple yoga practices to help reduce stress and improve well-being.
Results
One of the most memorable activities was a full-day hike without mobile phones. During this experience, participants spent time in nature, practised mindfulness meditation, and reflected on their thoughts in personal journals. This helped them understand the benefits of disconnecting from digital devices and focusing on the present moment.
Impact
The project had a positive impact on both participants and partner organisations. Many participants reported that they reduced the time they spent on social media and became more aware of their digital habits. They also improved communication skills, teamwork, and foreign language abilities while working in an international group. As part of the project results, participants created a digital booklet and several short videos to share the project’s message and encourage young people to use technology in a healthier and more responsible way.
