Background

The project Ideas and Actions for a New Europe was created to strengthen European citizenship, especially during a time of change in Europe, including Brexit. The main idea was to help young people better understand their European identity and work together across cultures. The project aimed to support youth workers in developing skills to promote cooperation, dialogue, and community engagement.

It focused on exploring what unites and distinguishes European societies. Participants were encouraged to reflect on culture, politics, and economics to better understand the challenges and opportunities of European integration.

Objectives

The project aimed to give participants knowledge, skills, and confidence to support active citizenship. It helped them explore European unity and understand challenges that may affect cooperation between countries. Another important goal was to empower young people to create community-based initiatives in their own countries.

The programme also aimed to improve intercultural understanding, professional skills, and personal development. Participants were encouraged to develop self-expression, critical thinking, and practical tools for youth work and social engagement.

Implementation

The project was delivered through three main courses: Culture, Politics, and Economics. Each course explored one aspect of European life while also connecting to shared values and social cooperation. The activities included workshops, discussions, cultural visits, and practical exercises focused on communication, creativity, and teamwork.

About 100 participants from eight European countries took part. They were selected for their experience in youth work and motivation to support social change. Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, all planned activities were successfully completed with the help of expert trainers.

Key Activities

Participants explored European cultures, democratic systems, and economic models through interactive learning. They analysed education systems, studied the role of art in society, and discussed financial and political challenges in Europe. Workshops also focused on empathy, communication, and personal empowerment.

Community-building activities, cultural excursions, and group discussions helped participants share experiences and learn from each other. The project also encouraged reflection on freedom, social responsibility, and cooperation between nations.

Results

Participants improved communication skills, confidence, and intercultural understanding. They gained practical tools for youth work and developed stronger motivation for active citizenship. Many reported personal growth, greater empathy, and better understanding of European values.

Partner organisations also benefited by gaining more experience in international cooperation and project management. They strengthened their capacity to organise collaborative initiatives and support young people more effectively.

Impact

The project encouraged youth-led initiatives and community-building activities in different countries. Participants became more engaged in social and civic life and more interested in European cooperation. The knowledge and skills gained continue to spread through local workshops, projects, and partnerships.

Overall, the project contributed to building a stronger sense of European identity and cooperation. It supported young people and organisations in working together to create a more connected and inclusive Europe.
